On the upper surface of a small rock on Dongbaekseom Island are carved the characters "Haeundae" (海雲臺), said to be in the hand of Choe Chi-won, a scholar of the late Unified Silla period. According to tradition, as he was travelling towards Gayasan Mountain he was so struck by the beauty of the scenery here that he piled up stones to build a terrace, and after taking in the sea, clouds, moon and mountains, carved the characters "Haeundae" onto this rock; the place name Haeundae is said to have originated from this. It has not been confirmed with certainty that the characters are in Choe Chi-won's own hand, but a poem by the Goryeo-period official Jeong Po laments that "the terrace has fallen to ruin and left no trace, only the name Haeundae remains," showing that this rock carving already existed by that time. Today, worn away over long years by wind, rain and waves, the character "Un" (雲) has become severely eroded.
