The Ulsan Maegokdongsaenghwal Site lies within what is now the Maegok local industrial complex. The site came to light through excavations carried out from 2002 to 2004, which revealed a wide range of remains spanning several periods: Bronze Age dwelling sites, Three Kingdoms period tombs and charcoal kilns, pits, and Joseon-period tombs and charcoal kilns. As a multi-period site ranging from the Bronze Age to the Joseon period, the Maegokdong habitation site is important evidence for studying the daily life of the ancient inhabitants of this region. The excavated Bronze Age remains are represented above all by dwelling sites, all of them square pit-houses. Drainage features, postholes and hearths were identified within the dwellings; the drainage features in particular are one of the important characteristics of Bronze Age dwellings in the Ulsan region. Depending on the size of the dwelling, four to eight postholes were found, most houses having four to six. Hearths, found on the floor of the dwellings, were used for cooking food and for heating. The Three Kingdoms period remains are varied, comprising tombs, pits and charcoal kilns. Charcoal kilns in particular are the most numerous type of feature found in this area, and it is thought that charcoal produced here was supplied to Gyeongju. A charcoal kiln consisted of a front working area before the firing pit, a combustion chamber where the fire was lit, a firing chamber where the wood was stacked and charred, a flue through which smoke was released, side vents, and a side working area. Since charcoal in ancient times was used mainly as fuel for ironworking, and given the proximity of the Dalcheon iron mine, it can be inferred that ironworking was actively carried out in this area.
