Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Gyodong-ri settlement site is located on a hill west of the Seo-Ulsan interchange on the Gyeongbu Expressway, in Gyodong-ri, Ulju-gun. The hill on which the site stands extends as far as the area where the Gyeongbu high-speed railway station now stands, and remains dating from the Bronze Age to the Joseon period are distributed across the whole hill. This is the largest settlement site from the Bronze Age to the Samhan period in the Ulsan region, and it is regarded as an important site for the study of Bronze Age settlements. Excavations have revealed Bronze Age dwelling sites, a Samhan-period hwango (a ditch encircling a settlement), and Joseon-period tombs. Bronze Age dwelling sites in the Ulsan region take the form of long rectangles or rectangles, the long rectangular form belonging to the earlier part of the Bronze Age and the rectangular form to the later part. Most of the Bronze Age dwelling sites here are long rectangular or rectangular in shape, but one round dwelling site of the kind mainly found in the south-western Korean peninsula (the so-called Songguk-ri type) was also identified. Artefacts recovered include various types of pottery as well as ritual objects such as star-shaped stone implements, wooden hoes and net weights, offering a glimpse of the diverse ritual and subsistence activities of the people of the time. Samhan-period remains at the site consist of a hwango and pits. A hwango is a facility formed by digging a ditch to encircle a village or hill; it was formerly thought to be a defensive structure protecting the village, but recent views increasingly regard it as a ritual space or a boundary marker with the outside world. Most of the hwango investigated in Korea date from the Bronze Age, and this Samhan-period hwango is valuable material, since such examples are rarely found elsewhere in the Yeongnam region.
