Seonamsa Temple Samindang Hall
선암사삼인당 · 仙岩寺三印塘
Provincial Monument

Samindang is a pond of unusual design, long and egg-shaped, with an island at its centre. According to the records of Seonamsa Temple, it was created by State Preceptor Doseon in the second year of King Gyeongmun of Silla (862). 'Samin' refers to the Three Dharma Seals — the impermanence of all conditioned phenomena, the absence of self in all things, and the tranquillity of nirvana — which together express a central tenet of Buddhist thought. Seonamsa is the only place in Korea where a pond of this distinctive name and shape can be found.
