Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the place where Choe Chi-won presented written petitions to the king. Choe Chi-won was a scholar of the late Unified Silla period; at the age of twelve, in the eighth year of King Gyeongmun (868), he travelled to Tang China to study, passed the state civil service examination at eighteen, and entered government service. He returned home in the eleventh year of King Heongang (885) and worked to set right the troubled state of government, among other things submitting his Ten Urgent Matters of the Time to Queen Jinseong. In his later years he lived in seclusion in famous mountains such as Gayasan and Jirisan, and ended his life at Haeinsa Temple on Gayasan Mountain. An outstanding writer, he left behind many works and inscriptions; his preface to the Nallang Stele, in particular, is a valuable source for understanding the Hwarang order of Silla. Yeongjeonggak (Portrait Hall), Sangseo Master Artisan and Chumomun (Memorial Gate) have been built on the site, along with a stele erected in the reign of Emperor Gojong of Joseon. Today a portrait of Choe Chi-won is enshrined here and memorial rites are held.
