Gimhae Jukdo Island Waeseong
김해 죽도왜성 · 金海 竹島倭城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krGimhae Jukdo Island Waeseong stands on Garaksan Mountain in Jungnimdong, Gangseo-gu, Busan, and is also known as Garakseong or Jukdoseong. Garaksan is an isolated hill stretching a long way from east to west, its eastern end lying next to a western tributary of the Nakdonggang River, giving it the geographical conditions needed to moor ships. The fortress was built by the Japanese general Nabeshima during the Imjin War (the Japanese invasions of Korea, 1592–1598), and was constructed across both sides of a low hill only 35 metres above sea level. A distinctive feature is the honmaru, the keep in the style characteristic of Japanese castles, located at the highest point. Since building stone was hard to obtain nearby, it appears to have been transported from distant places by both land and sea. Together with the nearby Gupo Waeseong and Yangsan Waeseong, Jukdo Waeseong formed a triangular network that served as a strategic strongpoint, able to block troops advancing from the north of Gimhae. It also allowed close communication by boat with the other fortresses along the tributaries of the Nakdonggang River.
