Kim Jang-saeng Grave and Surroundings
김장생선생묘소일원 · 金長生先生墓所一圓

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the burial ground of Kim Jang-saeng (pen name Sagye, 1548-1631), a great scholar of the mid-Joseon period, together with Lady Heo, who brought about the revival of the Gwangsan Kim clan, and Kim Cheol-san, Kim Gyeom-gwang and Kim Gong-hwi. Kim Jang-saeng studied under Song Ik-pil and Yi I, and during the Japanese invasions of 1592 he distinguished himself in supplying provisions to the Ming Chinese army. He entered government service late in life, and because he had never sat the state examination he never held a senior post; but after the restoration that enthroned King Injo he became a central figure of the Giho school, centred on the Seoin (Westerners) faction, and wielded considerable influence. He spent most of his time on scholarship and education, shaping one strand of Joseon Confucian ritual studies, and his disciples included the great scholars Song Si-yeol and Song Jun-gil. The burial ground is surrounded by pine forest, with the graves, shrine and steles of the Kim family gathered together in one place. This historic site formed the spiritual foundation of the Gwangsan Kim clan, which exerted great influence on politics, military affairs and scholarship throughout the Joseon period.
