This fortress was built on a hill near the coast of Jukseong-ri village in Gijang, Busan, by the Japanese general Kuroda during the Imjin War (the Japanese invasions of Korea), to defend against attacks by the allied Joseon-Ming forces and to allow his troops to remain on the south coast for an extended period. It is a waeseong, a fortress built by Japanese forces in Korea at that time. It is built of stone, with a circumference of about 960 m and a wall height of about 4 m. Waeseong fortresses were generally built on hills close to a river or the sea, in locations that allowed free movement and communication and convenient access for ships. This fortress is similar in form to Busanseong Fortress and is also known in Japan as Gijangseong Fortress. It occupies a strategic position linking Seosaengposeong Fortress in Yangsan with Hakseong Fortress and Busanseong Fortress in Ulsan. The walls survive today, but the surrounding area is now used as fields and houses.
