Wolhoedang Hall
월회당 · 月會堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krWolhoedang Hall was built by the early Joseon civil official Yeo Hui-rim (1481–1553) to teach the Yeossi Hyangyak, a community compact of the Yeo clan. It was first erected in 1516, the eleventh year of King Jungjong, and was moved to its present site in 1664, the fifth year of King Hyeonjong, by Yeo Hui-rim's descendant Yeo Hyo-hoe. The complex consists of Wolhoedang Hall itself, seven bays across the front and one bay deep; Jeonsacheong, a hall for preparing ritual offerings, three bays by one bay; Gyojiksa, quarters for the custodian, four bays by one bay; and a raised three-bay gate. It is both the first lecture hall built for teaching the Yeossi Hyangyak and the place where, in 1919, Song Jun-pil, Kim Chang-suk, Yeo Sang-yun and others wrote and signed the Pari Jangseo — a petition calling for Korean independence intended for the Paris Peace Conference — and shouted for independence.
