Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis was a self-governing assembly established by men of Cheongan County who had passed the saengwon and jinsa examinations, entry-level civil-service qualifications of the Joseon dynasty. A samaso was an assembly of local saengwon and jinsa degree-holders active in the mid-Joseon period, usually set up wherever more than fifty people in a district had passed the saengwon-jinsa examination. At first such assemblies contributed to the development of their localities through fellowship among members, political discussion and educational activities, but they gradually came to interfere in the county magistrate's governance and, in some cases, arbitrarily seized commoners and punished them, giving rise to serious abuses. Cheongan Samaso was established in 1703, the twenty-ninth year of the reign of King Sukjong, and rites are still held there every spring and autumn in honour of a total of 114 men associated with it: twenty-three county magistrates and ninety-one saengwon and jinsa degree-holders. The building measures three bays across the front and two bays along the side, and its roof is a gabled roof which, seen from the side, forms the shape of the character 人 (person).
