Dolmen Group in Deokgok-ri, Sacheon
사천 덕곡리 지석묘군 · 泗川 德谷里 支石墓群

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDolmens are the representative tombs of the Bronze Age, generally believed to be the graves of a ruling class with economic wealth or political power. Korean dolmens are divided into the table-type, in which four supporting stones form a stone chamber topped by a huge, flat capstone, and the go-board type, in which a stone chamber is built underground with small supporting stones, on top of which a capstone is placed. There are fifteen dolmens in all, within the village of Deokgok-ri, Sacheon, and in the surrounding fields. All are of the go-board type in form: the capstones measure 2.2 m in length and 1.4 m in width, and the supporting stones are 40 cm wide and 20 cm high. The underground substructure cannot be precisely determined, but is presumed to be a box-shaped stone cist. Together with the nearby dolmens at Sinbyeok-dong, this group is an important body of evidence that people had lived in the Sacheon region since the Bronze Age.
