To defend against seaborne invaders, Jeju Island built fortress walls running along its coastline, known as hwanhaejangseong. Sections of this wall still survive today at fourteen sites, including Onpyeong-ri, Haengwon-ri, Handong-ri, Dongbok-ri, Bukchon-ri, Aewol-ri and Gonae-ri. Kim Sang-heon's Namsarok refers to the hwanhaejangseong as "the Great Wall of Tamna". The surviving wall at Goneul-dong is about 140 m long. The wall bulges outward on its outer face, and along its top runs a parapet, called a yeojang, pierced with holes for firing guns and arrows.
