Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krTo defend against enemies invading by sea, Jeju Island built fortress walls along its coastline, known as hwanhaejangseong. Sections of wall survive today at fourteen places, including Onpyeong-ri, Haengwon-ri, Handong-ri, Dongbok-ri, Bukchon-ri, Aewol-ri and Gonae-ri. In his Namsarok, Kim Sang-heon calls the hwanhaejangseong "the Great Wall of Tamna." Byeoldohwanhaejangseong stands about 40 m south-east of Point 1 of the Hwabuk-dong section of the hwanhaejangseong. It is a double wall with an inner and an outer face, built using stones of various sizes gathered from the surrounding area. The surviving length of the wall is about 640 m.
