To defend against invaders arriving by sea, Jeju Island built ramparts running along its coastline, known as hwanhaejangseong, or coastal defence walls. Sections of wall survive today at fourteen locations, including Onpyeong-ri, Haengwon-ri, Handong-ri, Dongbok-ri, Bukchon-ri, Aewol-ri and Gonae-ri. The Namsarok, written by Kim Sang-heon, refers to the hwanhaejangseong as the 'Great Wall of Tamna'. The Samyang hwanhaejangseong lies midway between Byeoldo village and Beollang village. The terrain outside the wall is low while that inside is high, and the surviving wall now measures about 280m in total length. The outer face of the wall slopes at an angle, while the inner face rises at a slope close to a right angle.
