To repel invaders arriving by sea, Jeju Island built a defensive wall running along its coastline, known as Hwanhaejangseong (Coastal Rampart). Sections of the wall survive today in fourteen places, including Onpyeong-ri, Haengwon-ri, Handong-ri, Dongbok-ri, Bukchon-ri, Aewol-ri and Gonae-ri. In the Namsarok, written by Kim Sang-heon, Hwanhaejangseong is called 'the Great Wall of Tamna'. The surviving section of the Aewol Hwanhaejangseong wall is about 360 m long.
