To block seaborne raids by foreign invaders, Jeju Island built walls running along its coastline, known as hwanhaejangseong, or coastal walls encircling the sea. Sections of these walls survive today in fourteen places, including Onpyeong-ri, Haengwon-ri, Handong-ri, Dongbok-ri, Bukchon-ri, Aewol-ri and Gonae-ri. In his Namsarok, Kim Sang-heon refers to the hwanhaejangseong as 'the Great Wall of Tamna'. The surviving section of the Dongbok hwanhaejangseong wall is about 150 metres long.
