To defend against raiders arriving by sea, Jeju Island built a wall running along its coastline, known as the Hwanhaejangseong, or coastal defence wall. Sections of this wall still survive today at fourteen locations, including Onpyeong-ri, Haengwon-ri, Handong-ri, Dongbok-ri, Bukchon-ri, Aewol-ri and Gonae-ri. Kim Sang-heon's Namsarok describes the Hwanhaejangseong as "the Great Wall of Tamna", the ancient kingdom that once occupied Jeju Island. The surviving section of the Handonghwanhaejangseong Fortress wall is about 290 m long.
