To defend against seaborne invaders, Jeju Island built fortress walls running along its coastline, known as hwanhaejangseong. Sections of this wall still survive today at fourteen sites, including Onpyeong-ri, Haengwon-ri, Handong-ri, Dongbok-ri, Bukchon-ri, Aewol-ri and Gonae-ri. Kim Sang-heon's Namsarok refers to the hwanhaejangseong as "the Great Wall of Tamna". The surviving wall at Onpyeong is about 2,120 m long, exceptionally long compared with other hwanhaejangseong. Stretching from the Hadong coast of Onpyeong-ri to the boundary of Sinsan-ri village, it is divided into points 1, 2, 3 and 4. Since its designation as a heritage site in 1998 it has been continually repaired.
