This is the tomb of Yi Yeo-bal (1621–1683), a military official of Joseon. His courtesy name was Gunsil and his posthumous title Jeongik; his clan seat was Hansan. The grandson of the army commander Yi Ui-bae, he passed the military examination in 1651, the second year of King Hyojong, and rose through the posts of Bibyeonrang and Dochongsa. As magistrate of Sukcheon he governed so well that a stone commemorating his benevolent rule was erected for him. He went on to serve as army commander of Chungcheong, and was later appointed magistrate of Hoeryeong, where he rose to the rank of Gaseon daebu and was invested as Lord Hanheung. Hoeryeong, a major garrison town on the northern frontier, held a market for trade with the Jurchen tribesmen (yain); because there was no limit on the number of traders who came or how long they stayed, the local people suffered considerable harm. When Yi Yeo-bal took up his post there he reduced this harm by limiting traders to no more than 320 at a time and their stay to no more than twenty days. Under King Hyeonjong he was promoted to Vice Minister of War and then of Works, and as army commander of Pyeongan Province he repaired fortress walls, drilled troops in archery and prepared weapons to secure the northern border. He went on to serve as Commander of the Eoyeongcheong (Royal Guards) and as Left and Right Governor of Hanseong, and died in office as Jijungchubusa, an official of the Jungchubu, under King Sukjong. The tomb takes the ordinary form of the period: the mound has no protective kerbstones, and a gravestone and offering table stand in front of it, flanked by a pair of mangju stone pillars, with a pair of stone civil-official figures before them. About ten metres below the mound stands a memorial stele (sindobi).
