A shell midden, or paechong, is a site formed where shells discarded after eating, together with household refuse, accumulated among peoples who lived by hunting, fishing and gathering; it is also called a shell mound. The Daehang-ri Shell Midden lies in a field at the foot of a hill east of Hapgumi village, about 1 km north of Byeonsan Beach. It was discovered in 1947, when a field bordering the sea was cut away by wave action, exposing the stratigraphic layers beneath. It measures about 14 m north to south and 10 m east to west, with strata accumulating continuously down to bedrock at a depth of 130 cm. Comb-pattern pottery fragments and stone tools recovered from the shell layer of this midden indirectly reveal the way of life of Neolithic people. The Daehang-ri Shell Midden is valuable as archaeological material and has been designated and preserved as a monument.
