Pavilion Bowl Jang Gun Tomb
정발장군묘 · 鄭撥將軍墓

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the tomb of Jeong Bal (pen name Baegun, 1553–1592), a military official of the mid-Joseon period. In 1592, the twenty-fifth year of King Seonjo, when the Japanese invasions broke out, he fought bravely against the Japanese forces that invaded Busan, but the fortress fell and the general died in battle. The tomb takes the form of a single round mound in which he is buried together with his wife, Lady Im of the Pungcheon Im clan. The tomb site has recently been newly refurbished, and none of the stone furnishings are original — all have been newly made. This is because his body could not be recovered on account of the war, so a symbolic funeral was held burying his clothes and headgear instead; this is not out of keeping with normal practice. A new tombstone, made in 1982, stands to the right of the front of the mound. At the entrance to the tomb site there also remain the grave and memorial stone of the horse General Jeong Bal used to ride. The Pavilion Bowl Jang Gun Tomb is a valuable heritage site as the tomb of a general who died in battle during the Japanese invasions, and an important place that can serve as an educational resource for future generations.
