Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krIn the mid-Joseon period, Choe Su-seong built the Gobongjeong pavilion at the place where Kim Jeong had studied and taken his ease. The name derives from Kim Jeong calling Sampayeollyu Peak 'Gobong', or 'high peak', and climbing it for pleasure. After the Gimyo Purge of 1519, the fourteenth year of King Jungjong, Gu Su-bok lived here in reclusion, honing his scholarship. Later, when the pavilion fell into disrepair, Yi Cheon, the fifth-generation descendant of Gu Su-bok, moved it to below the peak and rebuilt it, giving rise to the present building. Kim Jeong (1486–1520) was a civil official of early Joseon. In 1507, the second year of King Jungjong, he passed the state examination at the top of his class, and went on to serve as Jeongnang of the Ministry of War and of the Ministry of Personnel, before rising to Vice Minister of Personnel and Minister of Punishments. As a leading figure of the Sarim faction, he worked to realise the ideal of virtuous kingly government, pursuing policies such as the eradication of superstition and the implementation of hyangyak, local community codes. Choe Su-seong (1487–1521) was a scholar-painter of early Joseon who studied under Kim Goeng-pil and, as a scholar of the emerging Sarim faction, associated with Jo Gwang-jo, Kim Jeong and others. Gu Su-bok (1491–1545) passed the state examination in 1510, the fifth year of King Jungjong, and entered government service, but was dismissed from office after the Gimyo Purge of 1519. He was bound by shared principle to Kim Jeong and others, and devoted himself to the study of the Confucian classics, training many younger scholars. The building has three bays across the front and two bays to the side. It was dismantled and repaired in 1981, when the Gobongjeongsa hall, a caretaker's building, a storehouse and an outer gate were newly built. The name-board of the pavilion was written by Song Si-yeol, pen name Uam.
