Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a shrine dedicated to Mun Geuk-gyeom (1122–1189), a civil official of the mid-Goryeo period. After passing the state examination during the reign of King Uijong of Goryeo (r. 1146–1170), Mun Geuk-gyeom held a succession of official posts. In the twenty-fourth year of King Uijong's reign (1170), during the rebellion of Jeong Jung-bu, he narrowly escaped death, being spared because he had earlier impeached the eunuch Baek Seon-yeon for his misconduct. When King Myeongjong (r. 1170–1197) later came to the throne, he was promoted to high office on the recommendation of Yi Ui-bang, and saved many civil officials from hardship. During the period of military rule he became the first civil official to concurrently hold a general's post, combining civil and military roles, and he was also highly accomplished in calligraphy. The shrine, thought to have been built in the early Joseon period, is a gable-roofed, tile-roofed building three bays wide across the front and one bay deep, the side of its roof forming the shape of the character 人.
