The brothers Ichal and Iyul were descendants of Grand Prince Imyeong, a son of King Sejong of Joseon. Born in 1614, the sixth year of King Gwanghaegun, into a distinguished family, the brothers were upright in conduct and deeply filial. When their father fell ill in their childhood, they stayed constantly at his side, searching everywhere for medicine and caring for him devotedly. When his condition grew critical, the brothers each bit their own fingers and let their blood flow into his mouth as a final act of devotion, and when he passed away they held the funeral, built a hut beside the grave, and kept a three-year vigil there. Later, when their mother's condition became critical, the brothers cared for her with the same utmost devotion as they had their father, and when she too passed away they again held the funeral, built a hut beside the grave, and kept a three-year vigil. Witnessing this, the villagers praised the brothers' filial conduct, and community leaders of Bupyeong-gu petitioned the court on their behalf. In response, King Hyeonjong had Han Suk, Lord Seowon, commend their filial deeds, and in 1670, the eleventh year of King Hyeonjong, bestowed a memorial gate honouring them as filial sons. The gate originally stood beside the house of the family's eldest descendant in Galsan-dong, but was relocated to its present site as urbanisation encroached on the area.
