This is an oval teomoe-sik fortress — one that rings the summit of a hill rather than enclosing a valley — surrounding the top of a low hill at the centre of what was then Masan-si, Gyeongsangnam-do; its circumference is 500m. It was built of stone mixed with earth; the north side of the fortress forms a steep cliff, while the south side looks down over Banetdeul and Masan Port. The fortress has now collapsed, but piles of fallen stone remain at the sites of the east and west gates, allowing the original form of the wall to be traced, and traces can also be seen of an ongseong (a small barbican wall built in front of a gate for extra defence). This mountain fortress shows the earliest known style of wall construction in the region south of central Korea, and Gaya pottery fragments and red pottery fragments have also been found around it, suggesting it was built by a small political power of Byeonhan established in the Masan area during the Samhan period.
