A spirit-path stele records the lifetime achievements of a king or high official and is erected near his tomb; this stele commemorates Choe Hui-ryang, a military official of the mid-Joseon period. Choe Hui-ryang (1560–1651) passed the military service examination at the age of thirty-five, in the twenty-seventh year of King Seonjo's reign (1594). When the Jeongyu War broke out — the second Japanese invasion of Korea, in 1597 — he served as magistrate of Heungyang County under the command of General Yi Sun-sin and achieved great merit, enabling Sin Deok-hui and more than 700 others held prisoner by the enemy to return home alive. After Yi Sun-sin was killed in action at the Battle of Noryang, Choe gave up his post and retired quietly to his hometown, where he lived until his death in the second year of King Hyojong's reign (1651). The stele consists of a stone body set on a square base and topped with a roof stone. It was erected by the general's descendants in the fifth year of the Gwangmu era (1901); the inscription was composed by Song Chi-gyu, with an additional passage added by his descendant Song Ji-heon.
