Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr"Pyoam" means "gourd rock" or "bright rock". According to tradition, Yi Al-pyeong, founding ancestor of Alcheon Yangsan-chon, one of the six villages of Silla, descended onto this rock and brought light to the world, and so it came to be called Pyoam. In 69 BC the chiefs of the six villages gathered here to hold the Hwabaek council, an assembly that decided matters by unanimous consent, and resolved to found the kingdom of Silla; Silla was duly founded in 57 BC. Pyoam is thus a sacred place that is at once the origin of the Gyeongju Yi clan's bloodline, the birthplace of the founding of Silla, and the cradle of the democratic political institution known as Hwabaek. A memorial stele inscribed with this significance was erected in 1806, the sixth year of King Sunjo of Joseon, and after Pyoamjae was built in 1925, a memorial rite honouring this significance has been held there every March.
