These tombs stand on a low hill sloping eastward from Yeonjeongjae, between Yedeok Reservoir and Yongam Reservoir. Twelve tombs survive today, though it is said that many others were destroyed during land reclamation about ten years ago. In their layout these tombs differ from other tomb groups: they are arranged in neat clusters of three along a north-south or east-west axis, and on the strength of this arrangement some scholars regard them as tombs with a square front and a round rear (jeonbang-hugwon), a keyhole-shaped mound type. Fragments of large jar coffins have been recovered from the surrounding area, leading to the view that these are Baekje jar-coffin tombs (ongwan-myo, burials in which a large earthenware jar served as the coffin) dating from the fourth to fifth centuries, but in the absence of a proper academic survey no firm information is available on the tombs' form or internal structure. The Hampyeong Yedeok-ri tombs lie within the zone of jar-coffin tomb distribution in the lower reaches of the Yeongsangang River, and are accordingly an important site for the study of early tombs.
