Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDolmens are the representative tomb type of the Bronze Age, also called goindol, and are known chiefly as the tombs of a ruling class that held economic wealth or political power. Dolmens in Korea are divided into the table type (takja-sik), in which four supporting stones are erected to form a stone chamber topped with a huge flat capstone, and the go-board type (baduk-pan-sik), in which a stone chamber is built underground with small supporting stones, covered with a lid stone, over which a huge capstone is then placed. A total of sixteen dolmens are distributed in Guneop 2-ri, Hwachon-myeon, Hongcheon County. In shape they resemble the go-board type, but since they lack supporting stones they are reclassified as the capstone type (gaeseok-sik). Plain coarse pottery has been excavated around the dolmens, showing that people had already been living in this area from the Bronze Age.
