Goryeo-dong Historic Site, Haman
함안 고려동 유적지 · 咸安 高麗洞 遺蹟址

This is the place where Yi O, a jinsa (licentiate) of the National Confucian Academy in the late Goryeo period, settled after resolving to remain loyal to Goryeo when it fell and the Joseon Dynasty was founded, and where his descendants have lived ever since. Yi O built a wall here and erected a stele inscribed "Goryeodonghak", meaning the dwelling place of Goryeo loyalists who refused to serve the new dynasty, and he cultivated paddies and fields to be self-sufficient. He also instructed his son never to take office under the Joseon Dynasty, and left word that even after his death his ancestral tablet should never be moved away from this place. His descendants honoured his wishes and did not leave for nineteen generations, over more than 600 years, and the place has continued to be known as Goryeo-dong down to the present. The village today contains the Goryeodonghak stele, the Goryeo-dong wall, the Goryeo family's ancestral house, the Jamidan altar, some 3,000 pyeong (a traditional unit of area, roughly 9,900 square metres) of Goryeo-dong paddies and fields, and the Jamijeong, Yulganjeong and Bokjeong pavilions. Because his descendants cherished their ancestor's legacy and devoted themselves to their children's education rather than pursuing official careers, the family produced many people renowned for their learning, virtue and integrity.
