This is the site of the independence movement where the patriot Yu Gwan-sun called for manse — the cheer of "long live [Korean independence]" that became the rallying cry of the movement — when the March First Movement broke out in 1919. Born in March 1902 in Yongdu-ri, Byeongcheon-myeon, she became a devout Christian and entered Yi Hwa School in 1918. When the March First Movement erupted the following year, she went down to Byeongcheon, consulted with the village representatives, and led the crowd in shouting manse at Aunae Market, where she was arrested; she later died in prison. In 1946, the Yu Gwan-sun Memorial Society erected the Gimi (1919) Declaration of Independence Monument on Gumisan Mountain and inscribed her life's achievements on it. The Memorial Shrine, built at the foot of Maebongsan Mountain to honour Yu Gwan-sun's patriotic spirit and console her soul, is a wooden, tile-roofed building measuring three kan across the front and two kan along the side, and it enshrines her portrait, painted by Woljeon Jang U-seong.
