This shrine enshrines the spirit tablet of General Jin Mu-seong of the mid-Joseon period, and rites are held there in spring and autumn. General Jin Mu-seong, whose pen name was Songgye, was a military official of the mid-Joseon period. When the Japanese invasions broke out in 1592, the twenty-fifth year of King Seonjo, he served as a staff officer under General Yi Sun-sin, winning distinction and a reputation for valour. After the Second Manchu Invasion of 1627, the fifth year of King Injo, his achievements were recognised and he was appointed magistrate of Guseong, a strategic garrison in the north. In 1826, the twenty-sixth year of King Sunjo, Yonggangsa Shrine was built at Sangnam-ri, Daeseo-myeon, Goheung, enshrining the spirit tablets of three men including General Jin Mu-seong, but it was dismantled in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, under the order abolishing Confucian academies. It was restored on this site in 1882, the nineteenth year of Emperor Gojong, and renamed Muyeolsa. The shrine has been rebuilt twice, and a statue of General Jin Mu-seong has been erected there.
