This is the site where, since about 130 years ago, onggi, earthenware vessels used in daily life, were made by local people. They fired the onggi in stone kilns and made their living by bartering the finished pots. This stone kiln is a highly distinctive type found only in the Jeju region, and the site offers valuable material for scholarly research by showing how the local people once lived. In the norang-gul, or yellow kiln, the firing chamber is called seok and the smoke outlet is called dwitgomang; it is called a norang-gul because firing above 1,100°C produces a reddish-brown colour. There is also a type called geomeun-gul, or black kiln, in which smoke is introduced at around 900°C during firing to turn the vessels black. In this kiln, ash-glaze holes are spaced at 50 cm intervals in the corners where the wall and ceiling meet; the kiln measures 17.07 m in length, 2.89 m in width and 2.51 m in height, and is presumed to have been repaired around 1948.
