Sinpyeongnido Island Kiln Site

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis site is also known as Apdongsan Norang-gul. It is where earlier generations made earthenware vessels for daily use, such as heobeok water jars, tonggae, byeong bottles and jangte. In other regions, the surface of vessels is coated with glaze, but here no glaze is applied and the colour develops naturally. Furthermore, while kilns in other regions are all earthen kilns, the pottery kilns of Jeju Island are stone kilns, the only ones of their kind in the world. This site is not only where the pottery culture unique to Jeju Island flourished, but also a place that reveals the wisdom of earlier generations. This kiln is a norang-gul kiln site built higher at the south and lower at the north. Ash-glaze holes are spaced at 50 cm intervals in the corners where the wall and ceiling meet; the kiln measures 16.05 m in length, 3.6 m in width and 1.8 m in height, with an internal width of 1.6 m, and is presumed to have been built in the mid-modern period.
