Dosan Village School (Bugosansuk)
도산서당(부고산숙) · 道山書堂(附高山塾)

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis village school originated in 1799, the twenty-third year of King Jeongjo, when Hong U-beom (pen name Ujol) built a three-kan thatched cottage, named it Jungnimjae, and made it a place of local learning. In 1806, the sixth year of King Sunjo, his descendants expanded the school, renamed it Daebangjae, and opened its doors so that anyone could study there. Later, Hong U-beom's nephew Hong Yeong, who had taken over its management, found the existing study hall too small; with the consent of the clan, he built a new school on another site in 1860, the eleventh year of King Cheoljong, and named it Dosan Village School. Meanwhile, in 1872, the ninth year of Emperor Gojong, the original Daebangjae was rebuilt; at this time Yi Mun-seung (pen name Wonseok) of the Seongsan Yi clan joined the school's gye, a mutual-aid association supporting it, and the name was changed to Gosansuk. This school provided education without discrimination by social status, pioneering equal education, and made a great contribution to the development of the nation and of local culture by training many talented people.
