The bang tomb at Sansaemi Oreum in Yusuam-ri is a rectangular tomb built by lining the edges with basalt slabs and then piling up a mound of earth. It is thought to have had a semi-above-ground or semi-underground structure, and in form it resembles tombs found in the inland regions of Korea. At present, the mound of this site has been levelled. The stone chamber measures about 480 by 290cm, the largest of its kind on Jeju Island. It appears to have been built by setting rectangular basalt slabs deep into the ground in an upright position, using five slabs on the front, four on the rear, seven on the left side and four on the right side. In particular, a long slab of about 120cm was used on the front. The bang tomb at Sansaemi Oreum in Yusuam-ri retains the original form of a Jeju bang tomb particularly well; most bang tombs on Jeju today have had their original form damaged or have been relocated. In its construction method and burial practices, this site offers valuable evidence with important clues to the history of changes in Jeju's burial customs. The site is thought to date from the mid-Goryeo to early Joseon period, but the identity of the person buried here will require detailed investigation to determine.
