평산신씨 종중 묘역 · 平山申氏 宗中 墓域

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Pyeongsan Sin lineage burial ground is located on a hill to the left of the lane leading from Hwanggok, Daegok-dong, to Dumil. Sin Yeong, a civil official of the reign of King Jungjong of Joseon, was the founding ancestor who settled here, and today some 40 households of his descendants form a clan village. Four tombs are arranged in tiers on the hillside, which slopes down from south-west to north-east. At the very top of the burial ground are the tombs of his father-in-law and mother-in-law; below these are the tombs of Sin Yeong's (Lord Yigan's) second son Seung-seo and fourth son Gwang-seo, and further below are the tombs of Lord Yigan's other descendants. Sin Yeong (1499, the fifth year of Yeonsangun – 1559, the 14th year of King Myeongjong) was a Joseon civil official whose courtesy name was Yunbo and whose clan seat was Pyeongsan; he was the son of Se-gyeong, who held the post of Sajikseoryeong, and a disciple of Kim Sik. In 1516, the 11th year of King Jungjong, he passed the jinsa examination, and in 1523, the 18th year of King Jungjong, he came first in the alseong-mungwa (a special state examination held at the Confucian shrine) and was recruited into the Hongmun-gwan (Office of Special Advisers); while serving as a suchan (compiler), he was impeached for defending his teachers Kim Sik and Jo Gwang-jo, who had come to grief. He later served as an assistant section chief in the Ministry of Justice and as an overseer in Hamgyeong Province, then held the post of section chief (jeongnang) in the Ministries of Works, Justice and War, and served as a censor (jipyeong). Because he refused to curry favour with powerful officials, he was at one point demoted to magistrate of Suwon, where his good governance won him the people's admiration. He later served as assistant mayor of Hanseong, and for more than ten years held the post of vice minister (champan) in the Ministries of Personnel, Taxation, Rites and War; he then served as Inspector-General, as Director of the Office of Censors, as Mayor of Hanseong and as Minister of Taxation, rose to Third State Councillor, and was finally reassigned as deputy head of the Office of Ministers-without-Portfolio. His posthumous title was Yigan, and he is buried together with his wife of the Danyang U clan. The burial ground preserves well the original form of a scholar-official's cemetery spanning from the early to the late Joseon period, and it serves as tangible evidence of property inherited by a son-in-law for the purpose of ancestral rites performed through a female descendant.
