Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSusanjin was one of the representative defence sites of Jeju during the Joseon period, part of the island's system of Three Fortresses and Nine Garrisons, and fell under the jurisdiction of Jeongui-hyeon. The fortress was first built in 1439, the twenty-first year of King Sejong, by Magistrate Han Seung-sun, but during the Japanese invasions of 1592–98 it was temporarily relocated to Seongsan by Magistrate Yi Gyeong-nok. It was restored to its original site in 1599, the thirty-second year of King Seonjo, by Magistrate Seong Yun-mun. The fortress wall was 1,164 cheok (352.72m) in circumference and 16 cheok (4.84m) high, with gates on the east and west. Of the nine garrison forts on the island, it is relatively well preserved in its original form, and parts of the projecting bastions survive at the western and northern corners of the wall. In the north-northeast of the fortress interior stands Jinan Halmangdang, a shrine built to console the spirit of an infant who died as a substitute for corvée labour during the fortress's construction.
