This is a pavilion built during the reign of King Hyeonjong of Joseon by the Neo-Confucian scholar Kim Su-jeung, whose pen name was Gogun. When Song Si-yeol and Kim Su-jeung's younger brother Kim Su-hang died in the Gisa hwanguk (Gisa Purge) of 1689, the 15th year of King Sukjong, in which the Namin (Southerners) faction drove out the Seoin (Westerners) faction and returned to power, Kim Su-jeung retired to the countryside, built this pavilion, and lived here in seclusion. At the time of its founding, several buildings — Songpungjeong, Samiljeong, Bujiam and Yujidang — stood scattered on either side of the valley, but these have since disappeared, and only ornamental rocks inscribed with the names 'Samiljeong', 'Wolgulam' and 'Cheongeunseok' remain. The Songpungjeong and Samiljeong seen today are reconstructions.
