장성 고산서원 · 長城 高山書院
Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a seowon (Confucian academy) enshrining the spirit tablets of Ki Jeong-jin, whose pen name was Nosa, together with those of Yi Choe-seon, Ki U-man, Jo Ui-gon, Kim Rok-hyu, Jo Seong-ga and Jeong Jae-gyu. Ki Jeong-jin (1798–1879) was a leading Neo-Confucian scholar of the late Joseon period. After passing the state examination in 1831, the 31st year of King Sunjo, he was appointed to many official posts but resigned from all of them, devoting himself instead to scholarship and the training of students here. This is the academy that Ki Jeong-jin named Damdaeheon in 1878, the 15th year of Emperor Gojong of Joseon, and where he taught. It was rebuilt by his descendants in 1924, and in 1927 a plaque reading "Gosanseowon" was hung, a name it has kept to this day. The grounds today include the shrine hall Gosansa, a lecture hall, the east dormitory Geogyeongjae, the west dormitory Jibuijae, an inner gate, an outer gate, and a library building. The library holds Ki Jeong-jin's collected writings and printing woodblocks.
