Dangposeong Fortress, Tongyeong
통영 당포성 · 統營 唐浦城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a stone mountain fortress built using the summit and hillside slopes of a low hill in Samdeok-ri, Sanyang-eup, Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang Province. It is said that the fortress was built in 1374, the 23rd year of King Gongmin of Goryeo, when General Choe Yeong led soldiers and many civilians to construct it in order to repel Japanese pirate raids, and that the raiders were driven off there. During the Japanese invasions of 1592, the 25th year of King Seonjo, Dangposeong Fortress was occupied by Japanese forces but was retaken by Admiral Yi Sun-sin; this victory is known as the Battle of Dangpo (Dangpo seungcheop). The fortress has a double foundation and is a typical stone garrison fortress (seokchuk jinseong) of the Goryeo and Joseon periods — a type of fortress built mostly of stone at strategically important places such as borders and coastal areas. Main gate sites lie to the south and north, and the walls project outward on all sides to allow cannon to be fired. The surviving stone wall is 752m long, up to 2.7m high and 4.5m wide. To the east, west and north remain the sites of watchtowers built up high for surveillance, and at the gate sites small ongseong — bent outer walls built beyond the gate to protect it — are well preserved.
