This is the house where Jang Tae-su (1841–1910), a loyal official of the late Korean Empire, died for his country. He passed the munkwa civil service examination in 1861, the 12th year of King Cheoljong, and after holding various offices including Byeonggo Chamui and Daesagan, he returned to his hometown and founded Sinmyeong School to nurture talented people, but the school was closed during the Japanese colonial period. In 1910, when sovereignty was seized by Japan, he wrote a 'Document of Self-Blame', reproaching himself for the loss of the nation, and resolved to end his life by refusing food. While fasting, he wrote a 'Proclamation to the Compatriots of Great Han', appealing for the restoration of sovereignty, and after more than twenty days of fasting he died on 27 November at his family home. This house, which retains its original appearance, is a modest thatched-roof house with a simple, sturdy feel, and shows well an aspect of the region's thatched houses, which are now disappearing.
