Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the birthplace of the patriotic activist Kim Do-hyeon (1852–1914). A 15th-generation descendant of Kim Mun-gi (pen name Baekchon), he raised a righteous army when the Donghak Peasant Revolution broke out in 1894, the 31st year of Emperor Gojong, and carried out righteous army activities in Andong, Hamchang and other areas. In 1914, grieving over the loss of national sovereignty to the Japanese, he threw himself from Gwaneodae into the East Sea (Donghae) and died. The house is said to have been built around 1580 by Kim Eung-sang, Kim Do-hyeon's 10th-generation ancestor, who as director of the Gunjagamgam (Military Supplies Office) guarded King Seonjo during the Japanese invasions of 1592; however, judging from its style, it is presumed to have been built sometime after the 18th century. The building has a square (ㅁ-shaped) floor plan; the main block is four kan wide and four kan deep, and the gate quarters are three kan wide and one kan deep.
