Mural Mountain Fortress Site, Uiryeong
의령 벽화산성지 · 宜寧 碧華山城址

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are two mountain fortresses built on the highest peak and a middle peak of the Mural Mountain ridge in Ha-ri, Uiryeong-eup, Uiryeong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, known respectively as the Upper Mural Fortress and the Lower Mural Fortress. They are presumed to have been built during the Gaya period, and appear to have been partly rebuilt in preparation for war in 1589, the 22nd year of King Seonjo, just before the Japanese invasions of 1592, at the same time as the Uiryeong town wall was built. During the Japanese invasions of 1592, the 25th year of King Seonjo, the fortress was rebuilt by the "Red Clothes General" Gwak Jae-u, and it is famous as the site of victories where he led righteous army volunteers to defeat thousands of Japanese soldiers. Records also show that it was extensively rebuilt in 1876, the 13th year of Emperor Gojong. The fortress originally seems to have extended down to the foot of Mural Mountain, but no trace of this remains today; Bronze Age dolmens and artefacts, as well as Three Kingdoms period tombs, have been found in the surrounding villages.
