Geomsanseong Fortress
검산성 · 劒山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis mountain fortress was built by Kim Do-hyeon (1852–1914), a righteous army commander active in the final years of the Korean Empire, who spent his own personal wealth to fund the anti-Japanese resistance movement. Geomsan, in Cheonggi-myeon, Yeongyang-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, has a stream on its eastern side forming a cliff, steep slopes to the north and west, and a gently sloping plateau to the south. Making use of this terrain, the fortress wall was built running from the summit southward along the mountain's western and southern flanks. On the western slope, traces remain of a wall about 200m long, built of mixed stone and earth. To the south, a wall was built around the edge of the plateau, while to the east the natural cliff was relied upon and no separate wall was built. Although the fortress is relatively small, with a circumference of about 500m, it is historically significant as a fortress built with private funds to save the nation, and one where righteous army troops were actually stationed.
