Geochang Naeo-ri Dolmen
거창내오리지석묘 · 居昌內吾里支石墓

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDolmens are the representative tombs of the Bronze Age, also called goindol, and are known mainly as the tombs of a ruling class holding economic wealth or political power. Korean dolmens are divided into the table type, in which four support stones are set upright to form a stone chamber topped with a huge flat capstone, and the go-board type, in which a stone chamber is built underground with small support stones, covered with a lid stone and topped with a capstone. There are three dolmens on a hillside at Naeo-ri, Geochang. The southernmost of these is a table-type dolmen, with a capstone measuring 2.86m in length and 2.50m in width. The one about 5m to the north now has only its capstone exposed above ground, but it is presumed to have originally had the form of a table-type dolmen; its capstone measures 2.70m in length and 2.40m in width. The remaining dolmen was destroyed some years ago and only traces of it now remain, though part of its lower structure is thought to survive. Plain coarse pottery, stone knives and stone arrowheads were excavated from inside the dolmens. These dolmens are considered important material for the study of Korean dolmens, as they preserve the structure of table-type dolmens, which are rarely found in the Yeongnam region.
