Im Gyeong-eop Grave, Chungju
충주 임경업 묘소 · 忠州 林慶業 墓所

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the grave of General Im Gyeong-eop (1594–1646), a renowned commander during the Second Manchu invasion of Joseon (Byeongja Horan). After passing the military examination in the tenth year of King Gwanghaegun (1618), he took part in suppressing Yi Gwal's Rebellion in the second year of King Injo (1624) and achieved great merit. During the Second Manchu invasion, while serving as magistrate of Uiju, he led the fighting at Baengmasanseong Fortress to victory, among other efforts, devoting himself to the defence of the country. The general, who opposed Qing China, fell victim after the war to a false accusation levelled by his political opponents. In the twenty-third year of King Sukjong (1697) he was posthumously granted the office of Jwachanseong (a senior state council post), and rites in his honour began to be held at Chungnyeolsa Shrine. The grave is a large joint burial with his wife of the Jeonju Yi clan, and the lower part of the mound is encircled with a granite border stone. Around it stand ornamental pillars (mangjuseok) that signal the grave's location from a distance, together with a sindobi (a memorial stele erected beside the road near a tomb to commemorate the lifetime achievements of a king or high official).
