Baebangsanseong Fortress

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a mountain fortress built by encircling the summit of Seongjaesan Mountain, 250m above sea level, south of the national road between Cheonan and Onyang in South Chungcheong Province, its stone wall wrapped around the peak like a rim. The wall is about 1,500m long; most of it has collapsed into a pile of stones, but a section about 15m long survives on the south side. The wall was built of natural split stones about 12m thick and 0.5m long, with the inner side, about 3-4m wide, built up using stone and rubble in a lengthwise-laying technique (in which the length of each stone is exposed on the surface). The wall was built leaning slightly inward from bottom to top; if restored, its height is estimated at about 5-6m. The Sinjeung dongguk yeoji seungnam records that the fortress wall was 3,313 cheok in circumference and 13 cheok high, and that there were two wells inside along with a military storehouse where supplies were kept; traces of building sites still remain in several places today. Fragments of Baekje pottery have been found within the fortress, suggesting it was built during the Baekje period. According to legend, in the first year of King Gaero of Baekje (445), a seventy-year-old man named Gongsu had twin siblings, Seongbae and Seongbang, living with him; because Seongbae knelt before Seongbang, the fortress was named Baebangsan Bokbuseong (伏俯城) after the two siblings' names. It is also called Bokbuseong (伏釜城), written with a different character for 'bu', because its shape resembles an overturned cauldron.
