Misungsanseong Fortress, Hapcheon
합천 미숭산성 · 陜川 美崇山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a mountain fortress built by encircling the summit of Misungsan Mountain, 757m above sea level, in Yaro-myeon, Hapcheon-gun, South Gyeongsang Province. It is presumed to have been built during the Three Kingdoms period and to have continued in use until the Joseon period, but it has now entirely collapsed and no longer retains its original appearance. The Dongguk yeoji seungnam records that the fortress wall was 1,643 cheok in circumference and that there were six wells and one pond inside. Because tombs are clustered not far from this site, the area is thought to have been a centre during the Gaya period, and the remains are presumed to date from the period when the area was called Jeokhwa, before it became Yaro-hyeon under Silla. There is also a legend that, at the end of the Goryeo period, General Misung, resentful of the founding of the Joseon dynasty, resisted here; this appears to be a legend that arose from the relationship between Gaya and Silla, later attached to a historical event of a later age. During the Goryeo period, when the Mongols and Japanese pirates invaded, the people of the surrounding area took refuge here, and during the Joseon period a beacon-fire station was installed to send signal fires as a means of communication, showing that it has long been a place of strategic military importance, a fortress of deep historical significance.
