KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is the place where Queen Jeongsun (1745–1805), the second queen consort of King Yeongjo of Joseon, was born and lived until she became queen. After the death of King Yeongjo's first queen consort, Queen Jeongseong of the Seo clan, Queen Jeongsun was invested as queen in 1759, the 35th year of King Yeongjo. This house is presumed to have been built between 1649 and 1659, during the reign of King Hyojong. Kim Hong-uk, pen name Hakju, who served as Royal Secretary and Third Minister of Rites under King Hyojong, was on close terms with the king; when the king learned that Kim Hong-uk was caring for his aged father, he bestowed this house on the father, Kim Jeok. The house has an overall square (ㅁ-shaped) floor plan. The main building, five bays across the front and two bays along the side, has three further bays added on each side, giving it a ㄷ-shaped (U-shaped) structure. To the south stands a detached building of five bays across the front and one bay along the side, which has a square floor plan. The wall of natural stone encloses the rear garden and the main quarters of the house, and the main gate is a plain, flat-topped gate (pyeongmun).
